Just as their guards are momentarily down, the pair suddenly get ambushed by an unidentified group of mercenaries who proceed to inflict minor mental torture on the duo, culminating in Jon getting knocked unconscious. As an exercise in sibling bonding, it turned out to be a resounding success as many bad guys got shot in the face, terrorists were thwarted in their attempts to acquire those rusty old bioweapons, and brotherly bonds were tightened up a few notches. Like most "good" stories, it kicks off with a prelude that sees North tasked with decommissioning an abandoned stockpile of Soviet-era bioweapons located on the Russian/Ukrainian border, alongside his brother Robert, who funnily enough is also a Marine. What, then, is North's motivation for becoming the scourge of rural Georgia? Best to start at the beginning. No point asking any questions, just kill 'em. Any man sporting a goatee beard, bald head, or even favouring a warm balaclava in these cold climes, are all fair game. North is permanently tooled up to the max, never leaves his cave without a long scoped high-powered rifle, and thinks nothing of unloading its contents into the collective craniums of whichever poor souls he just so happens to stumble across on his travels. As the main protagonist in Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 (reviewed original on Xbox One right here) he ticks all the requisite boxes for 'quiet loner' with relative ease and spends the majority of the campaign dwelling in a number of damp caves, like some kind of modern day troglodyte.

Take Marine Captain Jon North, for example, a guy that positively craves isolation. The bad vehicle controls weren’t fun in Far Cry and they aren’t fun here either.Snipers probably don't get invited to many social gatherings as their chosen vocation tends to make them a fairly insular bunch by nature. I don’t see any reason why this game wouldn’t be improved by making it a linear, level based first person shooter. I always enjoyed setting up in the best position, finding my target, and removing him from the equation, but everywhere else felt like a misstep. Initially, the idea of crafting ammo seemed like it could be interesting, that it would open up a world of opportunities with which I could snipe aforementioned dudes with, but I was usually fine with a couple regular rounds and headshots. You can pursue side missions or farm for crafting materials, but it all seemed like needless padding. It never really felt like there was anything I wanted to do other than just move onto the next mission, but actually going to new mission areas was either a chore, or simply a matter of fast travelling. The game presents the player with an open world, but I honestly wish it didn’t. It will utilize poor visuals and shoddy voice acting at every turn to try and drive home the trite, well-worn excuse it has for a story. It’s so distracting that taking the game seriously is extremely difficult, and Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 definitely wants you to take it seriously. The game will go from lush wooded vistas and scenes of urban decay to ugly character models with clown faces. The in-game graphics can look nice at times, but they’re extremely inconsistent.

Sniper Ghost Warrior will never capture the frantic, fast paced action and madness that is the core of the Far Cry series, nor will handle mission planning on the same level as Hitman or a Tom Clancy game. Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 does these things, and they are passably done, but it feels cheap, like it’s pretending to be some different, better game. I even cherish the planning and the forethought that comes with observing the compound, and looking for the best avenue of approach. Staking out an outpost and clearing it is something that remains enjoyable to this day.

Personally, I love the Far Cry series, with the recent more primal iteration excluded.
